Mayor Daley criticized John Kerry today for his “disrespectful” comment in response to GWB’s bycicle fall. The alleged Democratic nominee allegedly remarked “Did the the training wheels fall off?”

We at Geektastic feel that the alleged remark was pretty funny, and we believe that the good Mayor may just be jealous that he didn’t think of it first.

According to the Sun Times, The Mayor said “you see too much hate… When hate gets in politics, it’s a very, very dangerous aspect.” Apparently, though, nepotism, cronyism, and mob ties are just fine in politics. They’re not as funny though. [Sun Times]

NewCityChicago has published their Summer Guide for 2004. We like any site that runs a story about kite flying under “sports.” [New City Chicago]

Cardinal Francis George is ordering Chicago priests to deny communion to anyone wearing a rainbow sash.

The Rainbow Sash Movement is urging gays and lesbians to wear rainbow sashes to church on Sunday, and a few will attempt to receive communion.

Geektastic would like to see all Catholics who disagree with the church to start wearing various sashes and ribbons. Geektastic would have probably 15-20 of these adornments. All this excitment *almost* makes us want to go to church to witness the commotion. Instead, we will “worship at home” (read: drink wine in front of the tv) and watch “What not to wear” on TLC. Spiegel has sold its catalog to a Bermuda-based company for $53.4 million. The price is relatively cheap, according to analysts, representing just one dollar for each catalog the company has sent to my mom. Is this the “end of a catalog era in Chicago” or one less shitty mail-order business propping up the failing United States Post Office? [Sun Times]

Trading Spaces will be filming at two sorority houses in Evanston on Tuesday and Wednesday. Since you’ll be stalking the sorority houses anyway, you might as well check out the filming.

Trading Spaces was in Champaign last weekend, filming an episode at designer Doug Wilson’s family farm. This is not news, but we think the fact that stuck-up Doug is from a FARM in Champaign is a good little piece of investigative journalism. The shame! [Tribune]

DIY Network is looking for people in Chicago to be on the show “DIY to the Rescue.” If you have a botched home improvement project, fill out an application and keep your fingers crossed. If you’re lucky, the whole world will be able to see what a complete failure you are. The whole world that gets the DIY Network, anyway, which is nobody I know.

Chicagoist, “a website about Chicago,” is officially up and running as of today. We started reading Chicagoist two weeks ago when we decided to do a blog about Chicago, and we didn’t realize that it wasn’t actually “live.” We thought that the word “beta” under their logo indicated that they were fans of the popular fighting fish. But whatever. In case you think Geektastic is a Chicagoist rip-off, we want to take this opportunity to position ourselves in the ever-growing market of Chicago-themed blogs.

A Night in the Life of Matchbox Twenty live concert film showing in Lincolnshire on May 24. If you’re going to pay $10 for something this sucky, you might as well just donate it to Geektastic.

75 InspEARations. 15 6-foot tall Mickey Mouse statues are being unveiled on State Street tomorrow. If you go to this, it better be because you are protesting the defacing of our streets by corporate greed and Floridian creepiness.

10th Anniversary Party hosted by The Lincoln Park Young Professionals. $10 for an open bar, but it’s *still* not worth hanging out with all those assholes.

Some unnamed 1985 Bears will be signing autographs at Schwartz Sports on Saturday. Metromix says Mike Singletary will be there, but we’re betting it’s just a ruse to get us to see William Perry.

The Lookingglass Theater is holding a fundraiser, the Madhatter’s Ball on Saturday. If you have $100-$300 and a weird hat, you can mingle with David Schwimmer. If you don’t have $100-$300, just stay home and watch Friends. Or don’t.

Zanies Comedy Club is hosting “Stand-Up for Diversity”, a talent search for multi-ethnic stand up comedians. Auditions in front of NBC talent executives are May 25, the show is May 26.

Fox is holding auditions for its next reality show “the Legal Show.” If you are a lawyer and want to whore yourself on tv (and if you’re a lawyer, of course, you are open to whoring yourself), make an appointment and bring a resume. Leave your dignity at the door. Oh wait, you’re a lawyer. (This post not intended to offend anyone I know who is a lawyer.)

All links from Metromix because I’m lazy today.

The People vs. Friar Laurence. Second City’s musical features the trial of Friar Laurence, the man who killed Romeo and Juliet. $25. (Through Aug. 15)

Mexican Wrestling Macbeth. Awesome. $15. (Saturdays through May 29)

It’s the weekend, and as usual, there’s more going on than we could ever hope to go to. Where we will *probably* be going to this weekend is our Festival of the Week: Lakeview Mayfest. Because, you know, we *like* Dave Mathews Band Cover Bands.

If we were hipper, we might go to DePaul’s Annual Fest, which features a concert with local acts Lucky Boys Confusion and Common.

Also this weekend: Snoop Around the City and Garden in the City. [Metromix]
